Käthe Kruse, the well known and loved doll maker , was born in Breslau Germany in the year 1883. She, like others at the time, had many struggles during her childhood. But she got through them because of her doting and loving mother. She had a passion for many things but what she loved most was acting. At 17 she took to the stage in her first role in Berlin, under the pseudonym Hedda Sommin. Traveling with her company, she soon established a name for herself in Warsaw and Moscow.
She soon met the famous sculptor Max Kruse and they fell in love. Shortly after they married, she became a dedicated mother. At that time, the commercial dolls they found at shops for their daughters were simply not suitable. The porcelain dolls were fragile and would break easily. The couple agreed that their children should have dolls safe to carry around, cuddle and love. Thus began Käthe Kruse’s journey into the world of toy making by creating dolls for her children. In 1910, she brought her creations to Berlin to exhibits and as a result, she received two huge orders from the United States and soon, she started her own doll company
Käthe Kruse dolls continues to win the hearts of little girls and children today just as they did when the very first one captivated the heart of Käthe’s daughter Maria. After over a hundred years in existence, Käthe Kruse continues to produce top of the line dolls and toys and have even expanded to creating room decor for children, all keeping to the tradition of Käthe Kruse‘s desire to create items that children can love and cherish.
